BA. PSYCHOLOGY (UCT)
My name is Thatohatsi Reitumetse Mokoena. I am a practicing clinical psychologist.
I have practiced in both the private, public and medical settings.
I did part of my training at Leeuwkop correctional centre (community service) and Sterkfontein Psychiatric hospital (internship) which presented unique insights and skill building.
More importantly, as a human-being and psychologist I believe whole heartedly that my work on this earth, with the resources and the time I’m gifted, is to foster safe moments, safe spaces, and safe relationships. Where I have erred, I aim to repair and where I have missed opportunities, I pray for more.
I have observed in myself and through the wider personal and professional communities that there is often a commitment to a type of showmanship. There is a value put on the performance of strength, happiness and success. We could debate about how much of this has been thrust upon us and how much of this we opt into, but I have observed the ways this way of being can rob people of true connection, wellbeing and growth. I believe that experiences of safety can begin to release us from this performance.
In my practice and in my life, I commit and recommit to safety and softness; soft landings and connection which requires intentionality, messiness and incredible courage.
